Eastern Bloc Songs: Party, Pop & Politics explores the popular music of former Communist states, gathering around 65 trandslated song lyrics, mainly from Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, with short introductions to key artists and events, offering a chronologicaally ordered sampling of the stylistic range, political complexity and musical quality achieved by musicians working under the frequently strained contitions prevailing within offical cultures. including such diverse figures and bands as Filioinki, Omega, Czesław Niemen, Marta Kubisova, Olympic, Illes, Sarlota Zalatny, Tadeusz Wozniak, Hana and Petr Ulrychovski, Marek Grechutam Izabela Trojanowska, Gayga and Maanam, Eastern Bloc Songs offers the familiar story of post-war popular music re-told from a perspective on the other side of its standards Anglo-American looking-glass.
